XR Media Group, a pioneer in developing award winning XR experiences has involved us to co-develop an advanced Augmented Reality app for Rampage, a world renowned freeride mountain biking competition.
Rampage is an invitation-only freeride mountain bike competition held near Zion National Park in Virgin, Utah, United State. Since 2001, it has evolved to become freeride mountain biking’s most coveted title.
Hundreds of thousands of people tuned into Rampage this year and we were stoked to use augmented reality to create an immersive experience for fans all around the world.
With XR Media Group’s expertise in virtual production and creative vision, we were able to bring the entire mountain biking experience right into our users’ living rooms.
Fans can see a photogrammetry model of the mountain biking course in detail, select riders and follow the paths they took, and view the live broadcast during the event from the virtual billboard.
Fans can also explore 360-degree streams around the course and access exclusive content including behind-the-scenes footage, POV runs, 360-degree photos.
While streaming live, broadcasters also leveraged the app in their live broadcast and referenced the AR mountain, rider paths, and exclusive content to help fans better understand the action and excitement around the marvelous accomplishments of the mountain bikers.
On the backend, we created a content management system that detects new content and allows stakeholders to easily swap content in and out before, during and after the event. This was made possible using multiple AWS services for content delivery, caching, and scalability.
The 2019 Rampage AR app was successfully launched and integrated with our client’s existing app and we saw over 100,000 downloads on launch day. The app was also nominated for Best Consumer App of 2020 for AWE Auggie Award.
Augmented reality brings immersive interaction to sports fans like never experienced before. The Rampage AR experience is the perfect example of this. The AR app allows fans to interact with the virtual mountain biking course and digitally teleports them to the live event, all in the comfort of their own homes.
Sports broadcasters can also provide an in-depth analysis of the game or competition by referencing AR sports arenas or courses. This type of storytelling helps fans visualize data, statistics, and action in a meaningful and engaging way.
In the future, when AR glasses become ubiquitous, AR will forever reshape the sports viewing experience, bringing fans even closer to the games they love.
At Shape Immersive, we are always exploring ways to push the boundaries of Augmented and Virtual Reality technologies. We couldn’t have done this without the guidance and vision of XR Media Group.
