The Olympics in Augmented Reality
The 2020 Winter Youth Olympics’s goal was to bring engaging and informative content to its audience. XRMG and Intel partnered with Shape to develop an immersive augmented reality experience that would transport users to the Olympics venues.
Shape used a unique combination of a photogrammetry model of the venue and 3D interface design to create a net-new “3D model as interface” concept for the Olympics. Not only can fans view exclusive content including 360 VR videos and images, they can also watch the event unfold via a live feed broadcasted through a virtual billboard. They can also view the athlete positions in different sports and explore the venues like never before. To make things more interesting and fun, we also hid a few easter eggs like the official mascot, Yodli, on the AR mountain for fans to discover.
